Cross Country Review
2009-10
This is a summary of race reports for the last the winter
season. It is intended to give members something to look
back on and possibly jog their memories, as it was October
2009 when we dusted off the old spikes and went hurtling
through the woods at Goodwood. I’m also hoping it will
inspire club members, who don’t currently partake, to think
about giving it a go next season. There are at least two
races a month from late autumn to early spring, giving you
something to look forward to during those long bleak winter
months. Conditions are much more variable than you get in
road races, so there's no fretting over your stopwatch. You
can just go out and enjoy the countryside and indulge in
simple childlike pleasures like splashing through the mud
and getting generally dirty. Running tends to be an
individual activity and most of us race for our own personal
satisfaction, but cross-country is very much a team event
and very social. The courses are spectator-friendly and you
get plenty of support from your club-mates, including Phil
Baker who will convince you you can make up 50m on the guy
in front with just 400m to go.
Highlights
The club picked a lot of medals in the 2009-10 season
(see below) but besides the medals, there were plenty of
moments that gave a nice warm feeling about the
cross-country scene, like the unfailingly cheerful
volunteers who stand around a lot and make sure everything
runs smoothly while the runners have all the fun. The club
tea tent also deserves a mention as the best-stocked and run
tea tent in the county. One thing that really stood out
(literally) was the new flag. After flogging across half of
Sussex on a dreich January day, what a lift to the spirits
to arrive at Bexhill and see the club colours waving next to
our brilliant new team tent.
