Newsletter 14th December 2018

The first Saturday in December marks a milestone in the life of Chichester Runners & AC as it was the date when the newly formed Chichester Harriers competed in their first ever race as a team 34 years ago in 1984. By the way, “Harriers’“ is not a misprint as that was our name for the first year and the decision to change was to avoid confusion with the Chichester Hash House Harriers who were very prominent in the 1980’s.

Many things have changed over the years. Firstly, the Victory 5 was held on a Saturday around the streets of Portsmouth near the Mountbatten Centre. The field was much smaller in 1984 with 302 finishers including only 36 women. However, the standard was high with 12 runners being sub 25 minutes and 132 of the finishers inside 30 minutes.

After just three months interval training, Chichester put up a pretty good showing and with a membership of just 15 runners at that stage, nine of them turned out for the race and finished as follows: Gary Wright 44th in 26.23, Phil Baker 66th in 27.15, Paul Froud 68th in 27.25, Alan Mayhew 89th in 28.22, Nigel Brooks 102nd in 28.52, John Irwin 124th in 29.41, Dave Rang 171st in 31.24. The other two runners were Roger Swaffield and Mike O’Connor, but we seem regretfully to have lost their times.

Of the above, two turned into half decent marathon runners with Paul posting a best of 2 hours 22 and Nigel 2 hours 40. Alan was our first ever chairman and Roger a long-time treasurer with his firm Evans Weir long-time supporters of the Corporate Challenge. Phil, meanwhile, in his come back to racing found the race far harder than the previous time he ran in 1970 when he finished 65 places higher!

It was PB time over the weekend for both Justin Eggins and Chris Bird. Justin clipped off 23 seconds from his best for 10k clocking 36.59 at Telford last Sunday. Malaga, and their marathon was the target last weekend for Chris who went under his PB by ten minutes finishing in 2 hours 31 minutes. Excellent running by both.

James Baker joined 495 others at Peacehaven on Sunday 9th December, but they did not see him again as winning the 10-mile multi-terrain “Mince Pie” by a margin of seven minutes in a time of 55.14. Perhaps more importantly James, despite adverse conditions, improved by 3.5 minutes on his 2017 winning time.
