South Downs Relay

The club has been invited to enter two teams for this year’s South Downs Relay on Saturday 1st June. The event comprises of teams of six runners (male or female) running three legs totalling approximately overall 15-18 miles each along the South Downs Way from Beachy Head to Winchester.

This is a full day but a very rewarding one and one of the few times you get to run as a team. Team selection will be made in early February with the club wanting to put out two very strong teams.

Sussex XC League – Message from Phil Baker

“After a number of attempts by many clubs and officials, we have sadly been unable to find a suitable venue for a fourth Sussex XC League fixture scheduled for 2nd March. Our latest initiative for using the facilities at Ardingly College has come to naught in spite of the best efforts of officials from Lewes and Haywards Heath. Other venues have been explored over the last few months, but I regret the joint needs of suitable courses and enough car parking to accommodate the large number of competitors who attend league fixtures have proved impossible to resolve.

As a result, ALL THREE FIXTURES including what will be the final date on 9th February  will count for BOTH INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM AWARDS. We will try to be able to present at least some of the medals at Bexhill and any which are not able to be presented then will be presented at the Road Relays at Christs Hospital School on Saturday 6th April.

From a personal point of view, it is a pity that we will only have three fixtures in such a thriving league, but the good news is that Goodwood have just agreed our two dates for next season so let's hope the 2019 - 2020 season reverts to four fixtures.

Sussex Indoor Championships

Entries are now open for the Sussex Indoor Championships, being held at the David Weir Leisure Centre, Carshalton, on Saturday 16th February and Sunday 17th February.

Competitors must be registered with England Athletics and have a Sussex County qualification either by birth or nine months continuous residence. Electronic timing and photo-finish will be in use at these Championships. Club vests must be worn.

For more information and to enter go to https://entries.opentrack.run/2019/sussex_indoors/

Entries close at 23.59pm on Thursday 7th February with only advance entries accepted.

Only one result identified last weekend relating to Jane Harrop who ran in the popular Stubbington Green 10k. Jane finished first V55 lady (224th overall out of 1650 entrants) in a time of 40.50.

Miscellaneous Notices.

We are told entries for the Chichester 10K on Sunday 3rd February have slowed in the last week, so it is still not too late to enter. However, a reminder there will be no entries on the day.

A local event for the diary, especially if you are not involved with “London”, is the Blackdown Hill Challenge based at Fernhurst Recreational Field (GU27 3HY) on Sunday 28th April. It is a five-miler going up to the summit of the South Downs National park and presumably down again! For information and online entry go to https://bhc2019.eventbrite.co.uk.

Good luck to everyone running this weekend to include the Sussex “Masters” tomorrow.
