Summer Trail Run:

Summer Trail Run laid by Ivan. Meet at West Wittering Sailing Club car park off Coastguards Lane, West Wittering, PO20 8AT with start time between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm for a laid trail run.

Please follow directions below carefully as Sat Nav tends to direct visitors into a dead end on a private estate. From Chichester take the A286 southwards to Birdham and at roundabout bear right onto the B2179 to West Wittering. Towards the end of village turn right Into Pound Road that is signposted for the Sea and then bear left just past the public conveniences on the road going towards the Beach Car Park for East Head. After about 400m once passing the entrance road to the school/church and just after the rear of the churchyard turn right into Coastguards Lane. West Wittering Sailing Club car park is on the left-hand side just before the row of Coastguard Cottages. As the car park is quite small please park neatly!

The route will be entirely on footpaths around the Chichester Harbour AONB with a 6.2- mile loop and a shorter 4-mile option, which will be ‘out and back’. All runners run at own risk and must report in and out to the Trail Run Organiser.

Many thanks to Tracy and Kevin who laid a lovely trail last Wednesday from “Whiteways” to include for those on the long course the delights of “Bignor Hill”.

Southern Athletics League (SAL)

The report from the first SAL match of the season at Basingstoke on Saturday 13th April is already on this website with the results on Power of 10.

As way of background it was the best start the club has had to the athletics season for many years with an equally split squad of 24 contesting the majority of the 72 events. We lost out to a strong City of Portsmouth team who were in Division 2 last season but were delighted to beat Havant AC who finished in mid table last year.

In addition, it was the 25th Anniversary of the club's first ever league track fixture in London in 1994 with two members of that first match were also at Basingstoke namely the “Bakers” (unrelated) when James competed in the 100m aged 17 and Phil was the team manager. The pair have been ever present in the quarter of century since and have only missed a handful of matches between them. There were four senior/veterans in the men's squad but none of the 12 women were born when James made his first appearance.

Lastly, a special mention must go to Jenny Jakeman who travelled down from Worcester for the match and competed in 400m hurdles, 3000m, steeplechase and shot put and gathered 11 points from her efforts, a really crucial contribution as our gap over Havant was just 15 points.

The next match in the SAL is the only Sunday match of the year on 19th May that unfortunately clashes with the Bognor Prom 10K, so we need all those who are not running in that event to turn out at Winchester. Please get in touch with Phil Baker as soon as you can to confirm availability.

Richard Holder wishes to thank the club and in particular Keith’s training group for the preparation in him clocking 3.21.59 for the Paris Marathon on Sunday 14th April.

Chris Bird finished in 13th place in a time of 2.31.16 for the Brighton Marathon last Sunday (14th April) followed home by Justin Eggins (90th – 2.56.24) and Daniel McGreal with a brilliant PB of 4.02.21 in 3,263rd place.

Jeremy and Joanne Harrison ran in the 10k at Brighton clocking 54.14 and a PB 1.07.53 respectfully.

If you wish to run the second “Summer Handicap” on Thursday 2nd May please email Peter Anderson via nadandpeter@btinternet.com. It is important to do so as Peter will email everyone with their own individual start time.

Whilst not wishing to divert anyone way from Oaklands Park on Saturday morning at 9:00 pm we should mention a new parkrun in the area namely at Littlehampton. It is a “Promenade” run so avoid a blustery day!

The club has just been informed that the popular Fishbourne Flat 5 is being held on Sunday 12th May.

Entries for the Surrey and Sussex Masters County Championships are now open. They will be taking place at the Weir Archer Athletics Stadium, Kings Meadow, 422a Kingston Road, Kingston Surrey KT1 3PB on Sunday 2nd June 2019.
