South of England XC Championships

Next year these Championships are being held relatively locally at Stanmer Park, Falmer, Brighton on Saturday 27th January. The schedule starts at 11:00 am with the U15 Boys race, U20 Women (6k) starting at 12:40 pm, Under 20 Men (8k) at 1:30 pm, Senior Women (8k) at 2:05pm and Senior Men (15k) at 2:50 pm.

There is very strict and long-lead in entry process to be completed by the club. All entries must reach the SEAA by Friday 15th December, so your secretary needs to send the entries by post the day before. Everyone entering must have by race day a current EA registration. This year and with no exception only those members who have indicated their wish to run will be entered.

A free minibus will be provided to the event as parking is likely to be restricted, especially if Brighton have a home FA Cup tie that day. Please let John know that you wish to run soonest please.

It is imperative that everyone attending a club training session wears high-viz/reflective clothing and the Leaders reserve the right to exclude anyone not meeting this requirement. This includes those with head torches as your back also requires to be clearly visible to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike.

Only one on our radar this week and that was the Hayling Island 10 miler on Sunday 26th November. In the field 583 finishers for this flat road run including a short stretch of the old railway line and plenty of bracing sea air were Jon McElhill (236th – 1.14.39), Kim Nelson (239th & 2nd V50 – 1.14.53), Rachael Ballard (476th – 1.35.00) and Carol Palmer (501st – 1.37.59). Great running by all four.

Sundry Items

Congratulation to the teams called Five Runners (and David) and Wobbly Jobbly who jointly won the club’s quiz last Friday. There was 42 in attendance including Colin and Lynn Harley who were visiting from France for the weekend and brilliant news that they became very proud grandparents a couple of weeks ago.

Over twenty tried out the now named “Three Peaks Thrash” last Sunday on a cold and crisp but sunny morning. The 11.5-mile course took in the lower slopes of the Trundle, Binderton Hill and Stoke Clump with majestic views of the coastline and across the Solent to the IOW. The next “Thrash” will be on Sunday 31st December.

The juniors have an inter-club Sports Hall event at Bishop Luffa School on Sunday 3rd December and everyone is invited to attend to spectate or even help with this extravaganza of indoor athletics. The gun goes off at 2:00 pm with the doors opening at 1:45 pm. Entry fee for competitors is a very modest £1.

Remember to check out from time to time the “Links” page on the club’s website.

The date for the excellent Sussex Road Relay Championships at Christ’s Hospital School has been changed to Saturday 7th April 2018.

It is a 2:00 pm start with included in the entry fee a bus ride out from the finish area in Overton into Berkshire for the start with your gear being returned. Changing with showers is available.
