West Sussex Fun Run League

The penultimate fixture in the 11-month West Sussex League season took place on Sunday 27th October 2019 with the aptly named Steepdown Challenge at Lancing Manor.

Starting with the Hangover 5 at nearby Hill Barn in Worthing on 1st January, the 17-race fixture list has taken runners over a variety of terrains with a variety of challenges including the Chichester Runners own promotion at Goodwood in May.

In the latest race it was James Baker who led the whole field home over a changed course from previous years but still a very challenging hilly five miles on a pleasant morning after the heavy rain of the day before in a time of 27.38. Chichester’s next runner home was top over 60 Richard Miles in 66th in 38.03 followed closely by Tim Brown, 74th in 38.22.

A fine run from Aleksandra Vargin in 83rd overall was good enough for 7th woman home bringing her a full 10 bonus points. A further three of the club’s talented over 60 squad followed in quick succession with Tony Cooley  97th, Tom Blaylock  121st and Jan Hill 123rd. They were followed by the club’s next two highest points scorers, both notching up a near maximum 9 out of 10 with Amanda Godfrey 124th overall and 20th woman and Elizabeth Robinson next home in 125th and 21st woman.

The remaining ten members of the squad were Peter Dunne 138th, Tracy Lockyear 150th (F31), Persephone Hagan 154th (F33), Wim Amir 162nd, Sue Baker 174th (F43), Nic Jolly (F49), Peter Shaw 189th, Catherine Betts 197th (F55), Peter Anderson 216th, Jill Renson 226th (F74).

This coming Sunday sees the end of the 2019 fixtures with the Gunpowder Trot in Denne Park, Horsham where Chichester will be aiming for a strong showing to keep them in the top half of the 18-club table.

Beachy Head Marathon – Report by Wendy Whelan

“Tough one as winds were 50 mph. My time was 6,14.53 in 1400th place. Fantastic marshals. 2200 runners with my only gripe being overtaken by a three-legged dog but I got over it! Had a nice free meal at the end and managed to finish before rain started”.

Also running were Wendy Lutman-parc (998th – 5.38.07) and Gillian Brown (1592nd – 6.35.50).

On a very hot Spanish morning last Sunday (27th) Keith Akerman (1715th - 1.29.22), Richard Holder (2117th - 1.31.55), Marcus Hammerton (8427th - 1.54.20) and Laura Holder (14768th – 2.28.17) competed in the Valencia Half Marathon.

As no parkrun at Bognor this Saturday then numbers at Oaklands Park may be higher than usual, albeit weather forecast very poor. Can those running or spectating the parkrun please keep quiet on the progress of the World Cup Rugby Union Final as many will wish to watch the match from scratch on catch-up, thanks.

Good luck to everyone running over the next weekend to include on Sunday the final WSFRL match at Horsham, the Hayling 10 and our juniors in their first Sportshall Athletics Match of the season at Tanbridge House School, Horsham.
