Report from Mike Houston

“So pleased and proud last Saturday (17th) to be selected to represent Scotland at the 2018 British Masters Cross Country Championships in Swansea. I finished 23rd in a time of 26:51 and third V35 Scot to cross the line in a very strong field. A brilliant experience and perhaps put Chichester on the map to a few unaware of its existence north of the border!”

Well done Mike. As mentioned at the AGM Mike is stepping down after five years with parkrun, including the setting-up of Chichester and latterly as Ambassador for the area. A great big thank you to Mike for all his hard work, diligence and motivation with parkrun that has become a complete boom to running worldwide and of course locally. Mike’s last parkrun as Event Director is Saturday 1st December and we hope you will support him by attending with hopefully dressing in a blue/white theme.

Report from Kevin Lockyear

“A small group travelled down to Devon last weekend to see ex-Chi runner Angus Farrelly and his wife Michele and to also run the Drogo Castle 10-mile trail race.

The morning promised to be a nice day and it did not disappoint.  A field of 489 runners started on a slight uphill road that turned down into a steady two-mile slope into the moor valley. With a slight bottleneck we crossed a wooden bridge over the river with a 1.5-mile flat trail along the river side then into a rise of about 800ft over a mile (most of us had to walk this stage) took us to near the top followed by an undulating course up to mile 6, then a sharp decent to the river again.

We gained some respite here along the flat trail with stunning scenery to admire, then at mile 8.5 we crossed another bridge back to the other side and immediately negotiated a very sharply rising and narrow trail back to the top and arrived at the side of the Castle and the finish. Total ascent, was about 2100ft and we all agreed it was one of the very best 10 milers we have ever done, Thank you South West Road Runners. I also met up with an old running mate Howard Bidmead who ran with the club 20 years ago but now is a member of Honiton Runners.

I finished in 202nd place in 1hr 37min being second V60. Angus finished in 263rd place in 1hr 43min with Tracy Lockyear finished in 271st place (1hr 44min), Sue Barty finished in 329th place (1hr 49min) and Dave Barty who decided that 10 miles was not enough and tacked on another two miles for good measure came 475th in 2hrs 28min.”

Southern Athletics League

The SAL fixtures for next season have now been finalised and the fixture list has been very kind to the club as not having to visit Exeter, Plymouth or Newquay and Par, all of whom are in our Division. We have been allocated a home match on Saturday 13th July. Unfortunately, Mountbatten Track in Portsmouth is booked on that weekend for a charity event, but Phil has managed to book Down Grange, Basingstoke.

The fixture list is as follows:

Saturday April 13th - Basingstoke;

Sunday 19th May - Winchester;

Saturday 15th June - Portsmouth;

Saturday 13th July – Basingstoke (Host Match);

Saturday 17th August - Swindon.

Results

The Brighton 10k welcomed a large field of runners on a bright but cold Sunday morning on the 18th November including from the club Emma Hughes (393rd – 42.40), Jo Brining (1005th – 50.56) and V70 Trevor Baker (1030th – 51.25).

It was also a bright morning at Gosport, albeit from reports very cold, for their long-standing Gosport Half Marathon. Again, a large field was in attendance and course record of 67.33 to enter the history books. For the club James Baker finished fifth (1.13.12) followed home by Justin Eggins (66th – 1.21.26), Jason Snow (205th – 1.28.55), Dan Busher (387th – 1.36.45), Sarah Morris (396th – 1.36.45), Clare Snow (1557th – 2.34.45) and Richard Woolston (1574th – 2.38.13).

Miscellaneous Notices.

The lucky two drawn out of the hat for the London Marathon 2019 club places were Emily Bye and Martin Hill. We wish them well with their preparations. Reserves in order of priority are Kevin Williams, Greg Maynard, Clare Snow, Ben Ritchie and Seth Wise.

A reminder that the club has up to ten guaranteed places for the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 14th April 2019. The entry fee is £75. Now open to everyone with allocation on a “first come first served” basis.

Please note that from Sunday 25th November Chichester junior parkrun is temporarily relocating until early new year to The Prebendal School playing fields. Their playing fields are in the Avenue De Chartres opposite the multi-story car park. Toilets are available at this car park with free parking before 10:00 am available at the Westgate (PO19 1RJ). To access the field, use the gate on the north-west corner and please avoid clambering over the fences as a short cut. There is no on-site parking. The route will be three laps.

At Bishop Luffa School on Sundays 25th November and 9th December between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm (doors open at 1:30 pm) there are trials for Sports Hall events for our U11, U13 and U15 juniors. These are great and fun spectacles and well worth a watch if you are free either or both afternoons. Do speak with Phil Baker if you have any eligible age children who wish to give it go or free to help.

Good luck to everyone running this weekend and do let John have a note of your runs please.
