Sussex Masters

In very challenging and tricky conditions 27 veterans braved the hills of Lancing Manor and kept going despite several spectacular falls. Whilst not an epic year for our medal haul there was still brilliant bronze medals for Helen Dean (V55), Richard Miles in the V60 category and our V55 Ladies’ team comprising Helen, Sandra Nemorin-Noel, Sue Baker and Liz Wingham.

The event started with the joint Men’s V50 and V60 race over 5 miles with one short and two long laps. John Bullard led home the V50s followed by Dee Caldwell, Tim Brown, Andy Wingham and Peter Anderson for an eighth team placement. It was fourth and fifth place teams for the six-man V60 squad with Tom Blaylock, Jan Hill, John Miles, John Betts and Peter Shaw joining Richard Miles at the finish line and just out of the medals.

The Ladies were next up with two long laps that is basically all the way up to the Dew Pond and then down through the woods over very slippery and treacherous running surfaces. In addition to the already referred to successful V55 team Julia Hammond and Catherine Betts competed in the V35 age category, whilst Nadia Anderson and Elizabeth Robinson were our sole representatives in the V45s’. Unfortunately, a couple of drop-outs due to illness prevented full-teams in either age category.

The afternoon finished with the V40 Men who endured three long laps over by then an extremely muddy course. Our two teams of Charles Rodmell, finishing an excellent fifth place, Simon Dunne, Justin Eggins, Keith Akerman, Stephen Davy, Jason Boswell, Matt de Lacy and Gary Williams ended tantalising outside the medals in fourth and fifth places.

A thoroughly enjoyable event with a great team spirit and camaraderie. Bring on 2019!

Sundry Items

As mentioned last week the Chichester Corporate Challenge Series of races are on 21st February 7th March and 21st March (all Wednesdays). A certificated first aid course has been arranged to run on two consecutive Tuesday evenings on 13th and 20th March from 6:00 until 9:00 pm in the club room at the Chichester College Sports Pavilion. This course is for all coaches, leaders and parents who are responsible or help with any of our junior or senior groups. It will cover emergency first aid. All participants will be issued with a certificate valid for 3 years. All coaches and leaders are expected to have a valid first aid certificate so if you have not got a certificate or the one you have is running out in the next 12 months please register for the course as the club will not run another in the current year. The course is free for club members. Please email to Rob Wiggins at runchichester@outlook.com to reserve a place on the course. You must be able to attend both nights of the course.

Good luck to everyone running this weekend to especially include the large squad of juniors and seniors going to Stanmer Park tomorrow for the SEAA XC Championships.
