Winter Programme

As always there is a busy programme of running during the winter starting with the Goodwood XC Relays on Saturday 28th September. Other notable dates for the diaries are the Sussex XC League on Saturdays 12th October (Goodwood), 9th November (Lancing Manor), 30th November (Stanmer Park) and 8th February (Bexhill). The XC Championships are as follows:

Saturday 4th January – Sussex Championships at Bexhill.

Saturday 18th January – Sussex Masters at Coombe Farm, Lancing.

Saturday 25th January – South of England at Parliament Hill Fields, Hampstead.

Saturday 22nd February – Nationals at Nottingham.

The iconic club’s Corporate and schools Challenge are scheduled for 26th February, 11th March and 25th March (all Wednesdays) with the Sussex Road Relays at Christ Hospital School on Saturday 4th April 2020.

Beginners’ Group

As already published a new Beginners’ Course commences on Monday 9th September at Oaklands Park (6:00 pm meet). A squad of fifteen ran in the latest WSFRL match at Windlesham School on Sunday 25th August earning 98 points with the club in a creditable sixth team place. In the field of 310 runners for “The Whip” was our contingent of, 22nd Dan Busher, 35th Rob Stapley, 50th Tony Cooley, 51st Aleksandra Vargin, 74th Nadia Anderson, 87th Dave Maltby, 94th Wim Amir, 100th Tom Blaylock, 129th Ellen Perry, 137th Persephone Hagan, 148th Tracy Lockyear, 162nd Sue Baker, 166th Leon Perry, 211st Jill Renson and 219th Peter Anderson. 

Others decided to join 468 runners to test the challenging terrain of Arundel Park supporting the Arundel Scouts with their regular Castle 10k on Sunday 25th August. This event starts and finishes in the town and takes in the grounds of the Castle as well as the delightful Park grounds. Seth Wise finished in 9th place (40.56), with Emma Wickens next (45th – 46.08) followed home by Vicky Balandis (104th – 51.10), Jeremy Harrison (224th – 58.52), Martin Fryer (312nd – 1.06.04), Michelle Daniel (322nd – 1.06.38), Sandra Balcombe (335th – 1.07.50), Laura Holder (358th – 1.09.20), Sarah Freeman-Smith (376th – 1.11.19), Johanna Harrison (400th – 1.13.50), Richard Woolston (412nd – 1.14.53) and Helen Wilkins (441st – 1.21.56).

Foundation Group – Meet at 6:30 pm for a 6:45 pm start outside Rugby Club on the top part of Oaklands Park (car park entrance off Wellington Road). Led by Vicky and the team.

Development Group Meet at 6:30 pm for a prompt start by the pavilion for the cricket pitch on the top part of Oaklands Park (car parking off Wellington Road) for a jog up to Centurion Way for “Hills”. Starting at the “amphitheatre” at 6:40 pm for drills the session will continue with 5 hills at effort 8/9 with recovery down, lap of green at effort 6, 5 hills at effort 8/9 with recovery down and finishing with a lap of green at effort 6. Focus is on driving with arms and looking ahead when running up hill. Warm down back to Oaklands Park for stretches. Session led by Amanda.

Stretch Class Final week of course in the upstairs gym room (Studio) at the Chichester College from 8:00 pm. Duration one hour.

Event Group - Meet at 6:30 pm for a prompt start by the pavilion for the cricket pitch on the top part of Oaklands Park (car parking off Wellington Road) for 8 x 3 minutes effort with 90 seconds recovery. Session led by Keith.

Wednesday 4th September – see below.   

Trail laid by Guy O meeting at the Compton Recreational Ground (SU775146). From the Northgate Roundabout take the B1278 towards Funtington and directly after passing the Fox & Hounds Public House turn right and at the t-junction at bottom of hill turn right again onto the B2146. Proceed for about three miles passing through West Marden and the entrance to the Recreational Ground is on right just before the village of Compton. Distance options of 6.8m and 4.1m offered by Guy. All participants run at own risk and must report in and out to the Trail Organiser.

Thanks to Guy B who laid the trail around the relatively flat and delightful Iping Common area last Wednesday enjoyed by 47 participants.

The sixth and final “Summer Handicap” with meet from 6:30 pm at The Canal Basin (by the Richmond Arms). If you wish to have a timed run please contact Peter Anderson via nadandpeter@btinternet.com. It is important to do so as Peter will email everyone with their own individual start time. Alternatively, just turn up and run the route but it may not be practical to include you in the recorded timings.

The WSFRL continues with the popular Fittleworth 5 this Sunday (1st September) followed by Tilgate Forest (Crawley) on Sunday 22nd September and Great Walstead 5 on Sunday 13th October. As always pre-enter via Peter Anderson on either nadandpeter@btinternet.com or 07786 036820.
