Southern Athletics League

The club has a mixed male/female team in the South West Division 3 of the Southern Athletics League. This is an ideal opportunity for many of you to taste track and field athletics and perhaps even try something you have not done so before. Everyone competing earns points for the club in what is a most enjoyable and team-based day out. It is open to all First Claim affiliated athletes from U17 irrespective of standard and previous experience.

The schedule for the series of matches are:

Saturday 14th April at Andover.

Sunday 20th May at Poole.

Saturday 23rd June at Salisbury

Saturday 14th July at Salisbury

Saturday 18th August at Swindon.

To discuss and register interest please telephone Phil Baker on 01243 533784. Spectators are always welcome, and you never know it may be a spur to compete in future matches.

Training/Activities over next week.

Tuesday 3rd April – Training session led by Keith. Meet 6:30 pm at the Cricket Pavilion, on the top part of Oaklands Park for 200m reps with two minutes recovery.

Wednesday 4th April – Summer Trail Run laid by Tracy. Meet at Whiteways car park (TQ002109) anytime between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm for a laid trail run.

From Chichester take the A27 eastwards to Fontwell and then join the A29 and at the large roundabout at top of Bury Hill bear left and car park on left just past the roundabout. Distance approximately 7 miles with likely a shorter distance on offer.

All runners run at own risk and must report in and out to the Trail Run Organiser. Remember the gates to the car park at Whiteways close early so all latecomers should liaise with Tracy to avoid any “shut ins”.

Thanks to Peter for laying the trail this Wednesday in horrible conditions with many saying it is the worse ever seen up on Kingley Vale. It was great to see so many of our new members within the overall number of 67 giving these runs a go that are intended as an excellent alternative to flat road running.

Thursday 5th April – Group run led by Vikki. Meet 6:30 pm in the car park for the Fishbourne Centre.

Please note that all training sessions are inclusive to all and members are welcome to change back and forth between groups.

Sundry Notices

Anyone interested please tell John by the CONTACT US icon if you wish to be part of the team asap. For those running John will circulate the final arrangements in the middle of next week.

There is a Coaching Assistant course (SC11872) running at Christ Hospital School, Horsham over the weekend 14th/15th April with booking required by Tuesday 3rd April. Anyone interested should first speak with either Amanda or Helen.

Still time to book your place(s) for the club’s Presentation Dinner/Dance at the Crouchers Hotel (Birdham Road) on Saturday 14th April direct with Vicky.

Mike Houston does not enter that many races, but he was proud to represent Chichester Runners & AC on Sunday 25th March by winning the 15-mile division of the Cranleigh 15/21. This is a pleasant event on the roads of Surrey, albeit slightly undulating. During the race you can still decide which distance you wish to participate in. Mike was leading both distances as the finish for 15 miles approached but to run a further 6 miles was never his intention, especially given the race pace set and London Marathon looming. Excellent running by Mike who clocked 1.26.29 beating off all challengers by a staggering eleven minutes.

Marcus Hammerton appears to have been our sole competitor in the Lancing College 10k on Sunday 25th March clocking 52.31 in 124th place.

The 100 Acres event near Fareham, last Sunday, included a series of races with the thick mud the common theme of each. In the half Fay Cripps was first lady (8th overall) in a time of 1.32.32 with Vicky Balandis following in 68th (2.07.51). The 10k included from the club Ashley Pledger (20th – 54.56), Lynette Woodward (75th – 59.29) and Lis Peskett (187th – 69.27). It was welcome back to running for Mark Ring in the 5k who reached the finish line in 31st place (32.40) with Jan Ring next (33rd – 32.47) who was followed home by Caroline Webb (676th – 40.09). We understand that Emily Bye pulled out half way round the 13.1- mile course due to injury and we trust it is not too bad and she is back to running soon.

Mels Milers always put on a great 10k multi-terrain event with the base Christ Hospital School and Sunday 25th March was no exception. Included in the pack of nearly 400 runners was Kevin Williams in 85th place clocking a very respectable 48.15.

The results for the Jog Shop 20 did not include either full first names nor club so very difficult to identify anyone save for the winner by over 13 minutes namely James Baker in a time of 2.04.04. We therefore are unsure if T. Brown, E. Beck and P. Anderson were our Tim, Eric and Peter respectively!

Fleur Hollyer, competed in the annual Indoor Open Combined-Events meeting at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre Indoor in North London on Sunday 25th March. Although the winter weather, along with other factors, restricted her technical training it nevertheless turned out to be a very rewarding day as she notched up four new personal best performances in the U15 Girls Pentathlon. Using starting blocks for the first time in a 60m Hurdles, she stopped the clock at 10.75sec, just short of her previous best. This was followed by a new 1.32m PB in the High Jump, along with a PB 5.94m in the Shot. Next up was the Long Jump, with another PB 4.21m jump. Fleur ended the day with a well-executed plan in the 800m, which saw her record a PB 2min 48.01sec to take her points total to a personal best 2115.
