Newsletter 31st January 2020

Wendy Whelan ran the middle distance of the “Maverick Race” series at Amberly on Saturday 25th January in a time of 2.00.16. She made the mistake in the boggy section of following the guy in front as water was only up to his ankles then it was up to Wendy’s knees with a lesson learned about not following anyone who is 6ft tall when only 5ft 2!

Also running at Amberly in the 8k event was Rob Stapely who finished in an excellent joint first place in a time of 40.04. Rob reports like Wendy of steep hills and deep mud.

Excellent running by twenty-seven from the club last Saturday (25th January) at a very muddy Parliament Hill Fields, Hampstead Heath in the Southern XC Championships. All athletes deserve a medal for competing on such a challenging course with 1000s’ of others over the longest distances in all the Championship XC events. The results can be found on the SEAA website but under the drop down for “Events” and not “Results”.

U17 Fleur Hollyer competed at the prestigious annual London Indoor Games held at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in North London on Saturday 25th January that attracts athletes of all age groups from across the UK, and this year, included a contingent from Russia and Malta. In the first heat of her 60m coupled with a good start and her ever improving pick-up phase, she took 2nd place in a new PB of 8.32s, which is well inside the National qualifying standard. Her second heat saw her demonstrate consistency when she recorded 8.34s for 3rd spot. Drawn in the outside lane in the 200m and with a dynamic drive out the blocks, she controlled the race from the start to win in an excellent new indoor PB time of 27.38sec, which augers well for the summer season.

Sasha Vargin was first lady and third overall in a time of 21.35 for the Lancing Beach Green 5k on Sunday 26th January 2020. Well done Sasha.

Conrad Meagher finished in a brilliant seventh place in the Romsey 5 Road Race on Sunday 26th January 2020 clocking 27.08.
