Helen Dean was asked to run in for England in Masters’ Road Race Championships  incorporated within the Great Birmingham 10k last Sunday. Her report is below:

'Having just returned from running the Masters' 10k event in Birmingham, John has asked me to pen a few words about the experience.  I was incredibly nervous and despite weeks of hard training, my heart sank as I realised that my age group was one of the biggest.  All the ladies looked much fitter and stronger than me and they also seemed to know each other from previous Masters' events, so were familiar with where to line up etc.  The route was bleak to say the least - out and back along a dual carriageway incorporating several 'undulations' and dark, dirty under-passes.  The only highlight was the first 100m down quite a steep slippery hill which I literally sprinted due to being pushed and shoved from behind! Despite giving it my all, I was initially disappointed with my time until I realised that virtually everyone else was 2-3 minutes off pace, so I felt a bit better. It was an amazing experience with highs and lows throughout, one which I will never forget and which I consider was a real privilege to be part of.  Frankly, without the coaching/support of Keith Akerman and the Tuesday 'event' group, I would never have had the confidence to do it, so a huge thank you to them.  And now?  Well, those who know me may not be surprised to hear that I'm just glad to get back to normal training and local races!

PS.  I neither know nor met Jo Corbett (Chi Runners) on the day but understand that he ran extremely well.'

Brilliant run by Helen finishing third V60 lady in a time of 46.45 and “Yes” Jo also ran very well excellently finishing in seventh place clocking an impressive 32.18.

Jo and Jeremy Harrison trekked to London on Monday 27th May for the London Vitality 10k and despite the hot weather and loads of runners they did extremely well with times of 1.08.55 and  56.10 respectively. Also running in the London Vitality 10k were Chris Bird (115th – 32.35), Richard Holder (1394th – 41.20), Emily Bye (5886th – 51.49), Terence Goddard (9221st – 57.15), Philip Faulkner (11458th – 1.00.41), Clare Snow (12435th – 1.02.22), Laura Holder (12730th – 1.02.55) and Sandra Pidwell (18487th 1.22.13).
