Emsworth to Basingstoke Charity Relay – 16th May 2020

As in previous years we are looking to enter a number of teams into this ‘must do’ event that takes you through the amazing Hampshire countryside and up a few very steep hills.

Teams consist of six runners who, apart from the driver, are all expected to run the first leg together from Emsworth to Warblington. Each runner then runs another three legs. The legs vary between 1.5 and 3.5 miles and in total the three legs add up to about 7/9 miles over the day. The relay is very relaxed so you can run three legs straight off and then go home if you have to back early or else you can split your legs, stay the whole day and enjoy the high tea at the end!

The teams can be male, female or mixed. We intend to enter teams in all categories depending on who expresses an interest. There is no limit to how many teams we can enter, and all runners are encouraged to enter this truly inclusive event.

The most important thing is to recce the legs as they are not well marked, and you can get lost. You will get support to do this as we will plan recces over a number of weekends and during the week for those who are not working. Others may feel confident to venture out on their own.

Knowing the driving routes is also important as it is sometimes challenging to get the end of a leg before a runner! Each team will have a team captain who has taken part before.

Please express your interest by emailing amandagodfrey@btinternet.com with your contact details. Further information can be found on the relay website www.emsworthrelay.org.uk

Trail Runs

Many thanks to Jeremy with the assistance of Luke for laying the trail last Sunday enjoyed by over forty on a glorious morning with spectacular views once reaching the top by the windmill.

The “summer” trails start on Wednesday 1st April with the heady heights of Kingley Vale the target. More details nearer the time but there will be a programme right through until end of September with a trail each week save for the two weeks the club holds an event. There will be a couple trails on a Thursday to avoid clashing with a WSFRL race with the Summer Handicap (normally on the first Thursday of each month) deferred by one week.

Sussex Road Race Challenge

To correct note of last week it is the five-race series of the Sussex Road Race Challenge that Richard Holder has kindly agreed to manage/lead on. The website is www.sussexrrc.co.uk.

If anyone has entered or does so in future a race that incorporates either the Sussex Grand Prix Competition or the Sussex Road Race Challenge can they inform the club, please.

Results Update

On Saturday 29th February it was the “Brutal” for two of our members that is aptly named and, of course, in very muddy conditions. Sasha Vargin finished fourth and first lady in a time of 29.31 whilst Dave Kelly was seventh (second vet) clocking 32.48.

Also, on Saturday 29th February was the Chichester Harbour Chidham Trail Run over two distances. The results do not include clubs but those spotted in the 15k race were Terence Goddard, Jo Brining, Nadia Anderson, Emma Wickens, Jo Prosser, Trevor Baker and Paul Ford. In the shorter distance race (8.6k) Helen Dean was second lady.

Billy Simmons tackled the very challenging Steyning Stinger (more than the marathon distance including three of the main hills on the SDW) on Sunday 1st March. He ran the course in a brilliant 3.57.25 finishing in 30th place.

The strong winds and hurdling over the groynes on the beach at West Wittering met nearly 350 runners for the West Wittering 5k and 10k races on Sunday 1st March 2020. There have been reports of several falls, but we understand no serious injuries.

In the 5k Fred Austin finished third (22.33) whilst Sasha continued her great weekend efforts with a 5th place and first lady in a time of 23.25.

James Baker (38.08) won the 10k followed home by Chris West (2nd – 38.53), Mikey Neville (3rd – 41.47), Alex Eastwood (24th - 49.55), Mike Moorcroft (35th - 51.23), Warwick Trumper (40th – 54.24), Heidi Johnson (41st – 54.24), Vicky Balandis (47th – 54.32 but losing a few valuable seconds as deciding to go for a swim!)), Hilz Pollard (48th – 54.47), Andy Wingham (52nd – 55.42), Terence Goddard (67th – 57.10), Kevin Batt (91st – 1.00.16), Catherine Betts (115th – 1.04.05), Liz Wingham (168th – 1.12.13) and Richard Woolston (182nd – 1.15.10). It is great to report also that the club had both first male and female teams.

Thanks to Helen and Vicky for managing the Handicap last evening (Thursday) in conditions thankfully better than during the day. Well done to the 18 who participated. The timings will be posted on Facebook in due course. Next up is the start of the Summer Handicap starting in April.

Good luck to everyone running over the weekend to include half marathons on Saturday (Larmer Tree at Salisbury) and on Sunday (Surrey at Dorking). In addition, best wishes for a great run to Will Boutwood who is representing Sussex at the Inter Counties XC Championships at Loughborough on Saturday.
