South Downs Way Relay – Report from Keith Akerman

“Well what can I say about this year’s South Downs Relay, another superb
day saw some of the great and the good of Chichester Runners attempt the
97 miles from Beachy Head to Winchester.

In this modern progressive world of equality we entered two mixed teams,
the “A” Team comprising Graham Woodward, Lucy Thraves, Rebecca Moore, Mike
Houston, Justin Eggins and Seth Wise with Tom Blaylock on driving and
timekeeping duties started with the elite at 9:00 am and despite having to
run several legs without seeing any other runners battled their way to
finish in 8th place in the “A” team category.

The “B” team this year comprised of Fay Cripps, Jason Boswell. Rick
Pullen, John Bullard, Jason Snow and Keith Akerman ably assisted by the
superb driving and timekeeping of Dave Barty set off at 7.30 am and
despite a couple of unintended detours ran a fabulous race resulting in
a 4th place in their category.

The aim for next year is podiums for both teams so look out for the
email early in the new year.

A huge thanks to the Jill Renson and all her team marshalling at
Littleton Farm this year, seeing friendly faces along the way certainly
helps! Roll on 2020.”

Well done everyone and for the record the team at Littleton Farm providing refreshments raised over a £100 for St. Wilfrid’s Hospice.

On Sunday 2nd June on a very hot and surprisingly for the coast no cooling breeze several from the club ran in the Worthing 10k. James Baker finished eight (34.17) followed home by junior Harry Sage (138th - 43.37), Marcus Hammerton (212nd – 45.35), Andrew Moore (293rd – 47.14), Warwick Trumper (405th – 49.17), Jo Brining (616th – 52.29), Richard Woolston (641st – 52.43), Lynette Woodward (834th – 55.20), Trevor Baker (837th – 55.24), Joely Wharton (1602nd – 1.05.55) and Jackie Sage (1605th – 1.05.56).

Also, on Sunday 2nd June a few members ran in the Run Ditcham 10k, a two-lap hilly course in delightful scenery taking in parts of the school grounds. It was hard to identify from the results our runners but hopefully we have noted all namely: 5th Mikey Neville (45.57), 7th Tony Cooley (52.06), 26th Jason Boswell (1.00.02) and 39th Jill Renson (1.07.52). Those who only did one-lap were 32nd Sam Pullen (35.19), 37th Rick Pullen (35.36) and Amelia Pullen (35.49). A great effort by all, especially Jason and Rick who ran the epic SDW Relays the day before.

The times for last Monday’s one-mile time trial are now on the “Training” page of this website. Thanks to the team for organising and timing this aspect of our training schedule.

Also, thanks to Peter, Amanda, Elizabeth and Mike for organising the Peter Robinson Summer Handicap last evening. First home from the 41 runners were jointly Myra and Jan and the times will be published on both Facebook and the “Training” page of this website in due course.

There is again this year a 5-mile run at Goodwood on Wednesday 14th August. It is a chip-timed, out and back road race held in the grounds of Goodwood House, up the iconic hill climb. The adult race begins at 7.15pm, and there will free parking, a small race village, post-race refreshments, sports massages and entertainment on site. There is also a flat, one-mile junior race for U17s that starts at 6.45pm. Adults may also run with dogs, and those runners will begin at 7.20pm.

More info, and the online entry forms, available here: https://www.goodwood.com/stay-dine-relax/health-club/upcoming-events/5-mile-run-2019/

Good luck to everyone running this weekend to include on Saturday the Dorney Half but nothing noted locally on the Race Calendar save the Sussex Schools Track & Field Championships at the K2 Crawley also on Saturday. Also have a good race of those of you going to the island, Hayling not the Wight, next Wednesday for the “Billy 5”.
