Sawdust Trail Runs
All "Sawdust" trail runs are held on Wednesday evenings,
from April to September, from different locations around
Chichester. They can be regarded as social runs although some
may take them more seriously. They are certainly very popular
on some nights we can have up to 90 runners out enjoying the varied and beautiful countryside round
this part of West Sussex. Runs for 2011 are now finished
but we will be starting again in April 2012. Please note:
- Runs are for members of the club
but visitors are offered a reduced subscription for the
summer months.
- All runners must start between
4.30 to 6.30 pm - please no latecomers. This is thoughtless
towards the organisers who will have been laying the trail
since mid morning. Please do not think it is OK to say
they need not wait for you. Organisers are briefed
that they have a responsibility to stay until the last
person is accounted for.
- Newcomers - trails are laid as
blobs of flour which you must follow. They follow
tracks or paths which can be rough, slippery and covered by
obstacles. Most runs are between 6 and 8 miles and
will normally involve hills!
- In case of problems the phone
numbers of each run organiser are shown on the published
lists do have them with you.
A huge thank you to Roger
Freeman for once again helping to co-ordinate the trail runs
in 2011.

South Downs Relay 4th June 2011
This is one of the most popular races on
the club's calendar, with teams of six runners negotiating the 103 mile
South Downs Way. The recent dry spell, combined with strong sunshine and
a fresh breeze made conditions especially torrid through the hottest
part of the day, with occasional dust storms adding to the difficulties
faced by the runners. There were some cases of heat exhaustion and
dehydration, but no problems with the three Chichester teams, who coped
well with the conditions and finished in good order.
For the women, Angela Carpenter, Katherine Bond, Sarah Fenmor-Collins,
Helen Pattinson and newcomer Nicky Upton were joined by top over-50
runner Jane Harrop. With possibly their strongest team ever, hopes were
running high of finally achieving that elusive victory. Just 12 hours
and 50 minutes later, Sarah brought the baton home at Winchester. Their
main rivals, Hailsham Harriers, had elected to start 30 minutes after
Chichester and after what seemed like a very long half hour, Hailsham
were still nowhere in sight and a great victory was assured.
With an average age of 56, the veterans' team was the most experienced
ever for Chichester in this event with over-50 Sussex Cross Country
champions Dave Dorning, Dave Worcester and Rob Wiggins joined by Tom
Blaylock, Kevin McGreal and former world class marathon runner Don
Faircloth. Despite a major scare 3 days before the race when Dave
Dorning twisted an ankle, the team arrived at Beachy Head in pretty good
shape and ready to run themselves into the ground. They duly performed
to expectation and once again the combined age of the team resulted in
them winning the coveted Cooper Cup, given to the best age-related
performance of the day, from a field of 53 teams, with a time of 12
hours 5 minutes.
The Mens A team consisted of the highly experienced Colin Harley,
drafted in as a last-minute replacement, with Jan Hill, Micky Lyons and
newcomers Dan Turner, Mark Jennings and Terry Healy. They finished in a
highly respectable time of 13 hours 5 minutes. The newcomers were well
pleased to come through this tough event and even as they sat around
exhausted at the finish they said how much they had enjoyed it and would
love to do it again.
As always, the marshals at the changeovers
play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the race. Special
mention goes to the Chichester team at Littleton Farm, consisting of
Sue Barty and Janice Betts on refreshments, Tracy Jayant, Angus
Farrelly and Alan Rowley on the road crossing, Nick and Andy Fenmor-Collins
on traffic management, and Jill Renson and Tony Cooley on Logistics.
Also a great thank you to the drivers who clocked up over 300 miles
on the day.Click on the link below

teams.
